Guest Post: At Home in Arkansas… Tips for Holiday Styling

December 1, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

I love the Holidays and I love to decorate for them,
but finding the time is always a challenge.
Here are some tips to help you make your home look festive in no time.

Dribble

Mix in seasonal with everyday
You don’t have to put everything away to make room for your holiday decorations.
Make it look more natural and effortless
by integrating floral and greenery in with your mantle or bookshelves.

Here I simply added glass ornaments and greenery
to this arrangement my client already had displayed.

Use fresh when you can

myfamilyfever

I realize that is not always an option, but if it is then why not take advantage of nature.
I love the simplicity of using clippings from trees as decor.
It’s not only economical, it adds the amazing aroma of pine to your home.
Plus less to put away when it’s time to take everything down.
Just add them to your every day vases or bowls with or without ornaments and garland.

I also love Cranberries…
They are an inexpensive and natural way to add some color to your holiday decor.
Place cranberries in vases or other glass containers,
add candles and TADA you have an instant centerpiece!
amandajanebrown

Use Rosemary to make a simple wreath.
Hang it in your kitchen and use the sprigs when cooking or just enjoy the smell.
It’s also a great hostess gift!

all about you

Be proactive for next year and

When storing your decor find a designated place, then color code or label the containers.
I have tons of holiday decorations and I don’t use them all every year.
I keep all of mine in an area in the attic separate from the rest of our stuff.
That way I can quickly scan what I want to get down each year
and what I want to wait and use another season.
Here is a great link to check out for organizing for next year.

It’s about that time so put on some music and start decorating!

I have collected some of my Monday Market Faves

Believe it or not this is a hand-knotted rug
It has over 40 colors in Tibetan wool and Chinese silk, all done in a heavy abrash/striation technique and was handmade in Nepal.

Whether your house is on the market, or you just like to entertain,
it’s time to get your house show ready for Fall.

In addition to the usual cleaning and organizing tips, here are a few fun ideas to freshen up for Fall!

After enjoying that trip to the pumpkin patch with the family,

Real Simple

Make a number pumpkin.

Start with a white pumpkin. Drill pilot holes in the pumpkin to make attaching the numbers easier.  Use your address number, and place it near your front door to greet guests. Or, add your favorite digits and use it inside.

Try layering up your foyer table with cute fabric pumpkins.
I purchased these at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago.

Add some rustic (FREE) beauty to your decor with twig candle holders.
This DIY project is simple and natural, using just a flat candle holder (check thrift stores or Dollar Tree), garden pruners, craft adhesive and dry tree or shrub branches.
The same concept could be used on vases or other decorative items.

Big City Style

September 11, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Over the past weekend I took a trip to the Big Apple!
As you can imagine, I was very inspired by all the design and Architecture in the City!

One if the places we went was

If you have never been in one of these stores, then you are missing out!
They have all departments, but the lighting really stood out!

We also had lunch there…YUM!

I love the antiqued mirror

and marble/steel vanity
in the powder room at the restaurant

I love all the sleek finishes…pretty much everywhere!
So chic
What a great place to be during a time where Mid Century Design has really made a come back!
We just missed the 13 year remembrance of 9/11
But we got to see the Freedom Tower that stands where the Twin Towers once stood.
Pretty Cool!
I am ready to design some uptown spaces!
Let me know if I can help you!

Fall Flavor: At Home in Arkansas Guest Post

September 11, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Now that everyone is getting settled back into school and Fall is (almost) underway, it’s time to focus on getting your homes ready for the cooler weather.
Regardless if you are moving or staying put, a few changes can help your home feel more inviting!
Let’s focus on a few areas that are somewhat easily and quickly attainable.
Lighting, Textiles and Art can be done on any (reasonable) budget
and in most cases will add value to your home.
Changing out or adding a few fixtures is very easy and can change the feel of a room.
The foyer is the first thing people see when they are welcomed into your home,
why not make it spectacular!
Atlanta Homes

Sconces next to your bed add style and function!
Many are available not hardwired, so all you have to do is hang it up and plug it in to the outlet!
Greigedesign

Pillows, Bedding and Window Treatments
are a great way to add pattern and color to your space that is in no way permanent!
Caitlin Wilson
Why not order a fresh new set of sheets for your bed!
West Elm
Window Treatments don’t have to break the bank.
These fabric roman shades from ETSY add so much to this dining area for under $100 each!

Art can completely make an otherwise plain room come to life.
Original art is my absolute favorite.
Yes, it can be pricey, but there are many artists that have great deals.
Especially locals that want to get their art in homes.
If you are going to splurge on one thing, do it with art.
The best thing about it is you can take it anywhere.
My client commissioned this colorful abstract piece for their family room
 from local artist Abby Carman

My friend and local artist ,Amanda Kella, painted this one. It MAKES this nursery!

Free up some space Friday

August 22, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

I have decided to start a new blog series called
 “Free up some space Friday”
Like the other series’ I have, it may be very inconsistent and this might actually be the only one I ever do.
So it may not really end up being a series after all.
But I hope it is…cause my computer is FULL of stuff- mostly images that I save for future reference.
So here’s how it will go…
I will post pics from my computer that I need to say goodbye to in order to free up some space for others that I know I will be needing!
There will be no pattern or organization…Just images
It just happens to be Friday- so I am calling it “Free up some space Friday”
So enjoy and maybe you will find some of these interesting and/or inspiring
I love this colorful hand made wall basket. Such an easy way to add some style to a room!

Fun metal accent table- if interested in this let me know and I can get it on order for you!

Jonathan Adler bookends I used in a teen clients bedroom.

I have been gathering inspiration for our powder bath (that’s been unfinished for 2 years)
and I found this. I just love this room, everything about it!!
Except the towels…those can go.

This Rug…………….LOVE IT

I have no idea why this pic was on here, but I do love Skeleton keys!

Now please don’t tell my hubby, but since it’s Friday, I think I’ll go to a yard sale or two now!
Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At Home in Arkansas Guest Post…Fashion Forward

August 20, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

As a designer, it’s one of my jobs to be looking ahead to the upcoming trends.
Though I don’t focus too heavy on trends, I do feel every space should be a little fashion forward!

The 2015 Forecast has a lot of color to choose from.

Pantone’s complete home+interior 2015 palette

Most of these are a continuation of the colors that we have been seeing in design over the past few years!
So no need to worry…
That Radiant Orchid sofa you just ordered to go in your Emerald Green living room
will be just fine… for awhile!

And always keep in mind…even if not “on Trend”
It’s okay to be yourself in your home design and otherwise!!!

Here is a mix of a few of my favorite colors in the forecast.
Steel Gray, Bright White, Bellini and Meteorite

Cathy Green Interiors

In addition to some great colors, mosaic and geometric tiles

are going to become more of the norm in the upcoming months!
Lonny
franyoshioka
Also look to see floral prints and botanicals in the spotlight.
patternbank
As well as abstract cut- paper art!

patternbank

And like most trends, history plays a huge part in the inspiration.
Thanks Henri Matisse

When designing your spaces,
it’s easy to see all the new home fashions and think how good they look
and how you want to redo your entire home with all the new looks.
But there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.
I think it’s okay to follow trend, if you mix it the right way…

and as always, mistakes happen in home design (and life)

Lake House Inspiration

July 31, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

As we are getting ready for one of the last lake weekends this summer, I am daydreaming about our future 2nd home and different features that we may need to put on the possibility list.
I am pretty sure that we won’t be allowed to build quite this close to the water,
But Lake Access is a MUST for us.

I love a quaint little cottage
Fancy is not necessary for a cozy weekend spot!

Seriously, could this be any cuter???

And of course we will need an outdoor shower

And an outdoor fire pit
Could you image making S’mores here??

Until we can have our own, Preston can build with his imagination on Minecraft!

I love all the endless possibilities
But the best thing about a lake house is that…

At Home In Arkansas Guest Post: The right White

July 23, 2014 by Lindsey Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Choosing the right white can be challenging to say the least.
It seems like it would be pretty easy to just flip through the paint deck and pick one, Right???
It can be, but that’s only after years of experience and making lots of mistakes with the not so right whites.
Many whites have colored undertones that can clash with other colors,
so you need to be thoughtful when making your decision(s)
Whites look great in both high and low contrast settings.
Here are my go~to whites by Sherwin Williams!
I am loving whites for walls right now.
It’s a great back drop for a space and works for any and all design styles.
Antique white is a soft color that has a classic warmth.
Home Bunch
Dover White is a great crisp- neutral white that works perfect for trim, cabinets and ceilings.
Barbour Spangle Design
Houzz
Another great white is Creamy.
I love it on these kitchen cabinets with the contrast of the dark wood floors.
Nice!
